What The Hell, Another E.C. Trick !!!

LET E.C. PUT YOUR MIND AT EASE...

"Straining Fuel to Remove Water"…

This could be un-needed info for you but; then it just may be something that all of you can gain from and put in your book of trix of going faster and longer for All Racers or just you the Weekend Warrior who goes on that ride with your buddies on the weekend…

Some of you know that my thing to do for the last 30 plus years has been the Go-Kart Sean… Why? It was a new high TECH WAR for me to fight… Yes I know what your thinking… Mine was the same in the 60’s, and ever time I heard the word GO-KART with a smile on my face I thought of that strange little wheel thing to tear up the yard with for Kid’s. Hell, I was Motorcycle Racer and this was the last thing in my mind to be involved with.

Well I wanted to still race, but knew that I had got to the point where in Moto Cross Racing I was fallowing off more and healing up slower.

So I turned to Kart Racing for the week end to get my need for speed… You think go-karts are still just a Kids thing like me in the past…

Well with the Kart Engines now we turn the 125cc stuff 17,000 to 23,000 RPM and can make 40 plus HP… Hell this year at Daytona the dual engine stuff hit speeds of 140 plus RPM… Take a look at this Video and convince me that Go Karting is just a kids Toy for the Back Yard… http://www.youtube.com:80/watch?v=ry0oUGELp6U  … Now there is some sharp Old Dog’s from the Dark SIDE that raced Motorcycles in the past that has added other answers and questions to this thread that I started… Now click on this link which will take you to Bob’s 4/Cycle FORUM and the 2/cycle forum part where I started a thread labeled…

Something you might like to know... just "E.C.“

Setting here doing some R&D work on the stock market and for some reason this thread come back into my think tank... The white death and gel for the most part is because of water in your Alky... This is the big reason to always flush carb after race night is over... Now I realize that sometimes because you’re in a holding pit for tech and can't start the engine to flush it... My way is I have a trick pump type oil squirt can that has a air fitting on it and I pressure rise it with air... Now with this all I have to do is pull the fuel line off the tank and plug my oilcan into the fuel line going to the fuel pump and tank... Raise the nose of Kart up in the Air and now push the pump trigger down on the oil squirt can and the flush gas will push all the alky out of the fuel pump and carb... When nothing is coming out of carb but flush gas your done and ready to go home...

Now lets get back to water in the Alky. The older Alky gets the more water it will have in it and if your buying Alky at the track you have no idea how old it is or how much water may be it... So not only are you making white death your not making the power you should be out of your fuel in the tank...

So what is the answer and how to get the water out of your alky so you get max power out of it ?????

Back in the late 50's and early 60's the Uncer Boys owned the PIKES PEAK RACE held once a year... My mentor at that time and I THINK IT WAS 1960, had a Pikes Peak Sprint Car and we was there for that years race... Any way I was nosing around in the pits looking at the Race Cars and as I walked by the Uncer's trailer there was Louie at the back door with a bucket and a 5 gallon Jerry can with a big funnel in the top of it, like you use to fill tractors with... Well this funnel had a big chamois skin (better know as a shammy skin to you) over the top of the funnel and Louie was poring Alky out of the bucket on top of it and letting it go into the Jerry Can... I said Louie what are you doing? With a smile on his face he said, "Removing the water from my Alky..."

AND YES THIS TRICK WILL WORK ON THAT CAN OF TRICK GAS SETTING IN THE SHOP FOR A LONG TIME OR JUST BOUGHT FROM YOUR LOCAL GAS STATION…

Now take a look at some of the information added to this thread by Some of the “Old Dogs” from the past Bike Racing added to this…

Thanks for jarring the memory cells, did this in the 60's too.[chamois trick]

One thought EC- What if your gas or alky is already "pre-mixed", and has been sitting for some time. Wouldn’t the chamois trick also absorb some oil???

E.C. Birt... Forum Veteran

I would think so.... And when you used it to Dry Hot Rod with would leave streaks on the Candy Apple paint job....

Actually this is an OLD pilots trick probably WWI or earlier. Water in gas in an airplane can really ruin your day.

George, I tried it today, chamois, hydrometer, funnel with an outer wears filter inside fuel mixed with oil, and without, Hyd. read 796 on a scale of 700 -800, I was doing' great until I poured the mixed fuel into funnel with the chamois inside, then all flow stopped, then an old buddy that used to race flat track M'Cycles arrived and when I told him what I did he said mixed with oil won't pass, they tried it many yrs. ago.

 Jack...
I always thought just what you found out would happen and never took that chance because I didn't want to hurt my shammy skin... When I was done straining fuel I never wrung it dry... Just hung on cloths line to let Mother Nature Dry... On mixed fuel, any left over just powered into Race Hauler to use up... and tried not to mix any more then needed... If fuel had ANY funny stuff in it just pulled out of track and stopped off at first gas station to top off tank with gas... Some time's engine was very happy with mixed fuel for Racers... He heeeee

BY THE WAY... see no reason you couldn't wash shammy with solvent and be as good as new...
Should remove all oil from it...

There was a time when I would use left over race day fuel in my tow vehicle, lawnmower parts cleaner, but in today’s vehicles with cat. Converters, it's just not a great idea, so there are only 3 alternatives today, parts cleaning, fire ant nests and snakes, snakes do not like alcohol in any form, learned that on The Darwin Awards site, when they mentioned that a large number of snake bite situations involve alcohol.

Alky goes thru the chamois.
Water is absorbed and wicks out into the chamois.
Strain the gas or meth first, then add the oil. Then "shake and bake."
