R.I.P. ADELANTO GRAND PRIX 1980-2010
END OF AN ERA
By Matt Cuddy
2010 will be the last running of the famed Adelanto Grand Prix. For me it’s like the death of an old friend. No more will I spend weeks in preparation for the race, only to be thwarted by traffic, vehicle break-downs, or a flat tire.
For all those who looked forward to the race, and enjoyed every jump, bump, whoop and hot link, this is the passing of an era.
Economic issues, along with the overabundance of spectators doomed the grand prix to the history books. It’s over, like Corriganville, Elsinore, and now Adelanto. All dead and gone.
What other race could you take a stock street-legal 1972 Yamaha DT2 Enduro, dice it out with Maicos, eight speed Huskys, Bultaco Banditos, and win?
I’ll be there that last Sunday to see the last vintage class go off in a haze of bean oil, and I’ll need a few dozen t-shirts to dry up the tears afterwards.
Thank you Vipers, it was one hell of a ride.
God Speed AGP.
